Automotive check engine light testing and repair involves diagnosing the underlying issues causing the check engine light (CEL) to illuminate on the vehicle’s dashboard. Using specialized diagnostic tools, technicians connect to the vehicle’s onboard computer system to retrieve trouble codes, monitor data and perform in depth testing to determine the exact cause of and repair needed to correct the issue.

After repairs, the system is reset and again tested ensure the issue is resolved. Regular testing and prompt repairs can prevent more serious damage and improve vehicle performance.

Starting and Charging System Repair

Automotive starting and charging system inspection involves checking the components responsible for starting the engine and maintaining the electrical power supply. The inspection includes testing the battery for charge levels and overall health, verifying the starter motor's functionality, and ensuring the alternator is properly charging the battery. Additionally, the condition of related parts such as the battery cables, terminals, and fuses is assessed for signs of wear or damage. Proper operation of the ignition switch, relays, and fuses is also checked to prevent issues like failure to start or battery drain. Regular inspection helps ensure the vehicle remains reliable and prevents breakdowns due to electrical system failures.

Automotive air conditioning service or repair involves diagnosing, maintaining, and restoring the A/C system of a vehicle to ensure optimal performance. Technicians inspect and recharge refrigerant levels, check for leaks, and test various components, such as the compressor, condenser, evaporator, and hoses, for signs of wear or damage. If necessary, they may replace faulty parts, repair leaks, or clean components to enhance system efficiency.

Regular maintenance of the air conditioning system not only ensures a comfortable ride but also helps to prevent costly repairs and extend the lifespan of the system.

We offer yearly A/C checks that include recovering and recharging the refrigerant, adding Dye to the system to quickly identify any future leaks and ensuring the system is operating as designed.

Alternator Service/Repair

An alternator is a crucial component in a vehicle’s electrical system, responsible for converting mechanical energy from the engine into electrical energy to charge the battery and power the vehicle's electrical systems, such as lights, radio, and air conditioning. When replacing an alternator, the old unit is first disconnected from the battery and removed from its mountings. The drive belt is detached, and the wiring is unplugged from the alternator. The new alternator is then installed by securing it in place, reconnecting the wiring, and ensuring the drive belt is properly aligned and tightened. After installation, the system is tested to ensure the alternator is functioning properly and providing adequate charging voltage.

An automotive timing belt is a critical component that ensures the engine’s camshaft and crankshaft rotate in sync, allowing the engine’s valves and pistons to operate at the correct times. This precise coordination is essential for the proper functioning of the engine, preventing internal damage. When replacing a timing belt, the mechanic first removes components obstructing access, such as the engine cover and other belts. The old timing belt is then carefully removed, ensuring the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft remain aligned. The new timing belt is installed, and the system is rechecked for proper alignment and tension before reassembling the engine. In some cases, other components such as the water pump, tensioner, and pulleys are also replaced as part of the service, since they are often located near the timing belt and may wear out over time. After replacement, the engine is tested to ensure smooth operation.

Engine Tune-Up Services

An engine tune-up is a maintenance service aimed at optimizing the performance and efficiency of an engine. It typically involves inspecting and replacing various components that wear out over time, such as spark plugs, air filters, fuel filters, and sometimes the ignition system. The service may also include adjusting the timing, checking and cleaning the fuel injectors, inspecting the belts and hoses, and testing the battery and charging system. The goal of a tune-up is to restore the engine’s power, fuel efficiency, and smooth operation, as well as to prevent potential breakdowns. While the specific parts replaced can vary depending on the vehicle's make and model, common replacements during a tune-up include spark plugs, air and fuel filters, and sometimes the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve. Regular tune-ups can prolong the engine's lifespan and help maintain overall vehicle performance.

Automotive preventative maintenance refers to the routine services and inspections recommended by vehicle manufacturers to keep a car running smoothly and prevent costly repairs. These tasks, which are typically outlined in the vehicle’s owner’s manual, include regular oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, fluid checks, air filter replacements, and timing belt or chain replacements. By following the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance schedule, car owners can catch minor issues before they become major problems, improve fuel efficiency, enhance vehicle safety, and extend the overall lifespan of the car. Regular maintenance helps ensure the engine runs efficiently, reduces the likelihood of breakdowns, and can ultimately save money by avoiding expensive repairs.

At Claymont Auto Repair we focus heavily on finding small problems before they become large problems. While we can't see into the future we can catch minor issues and recommend the proper repair before further damage is done or a breakdown occurs. During nearly every service our experienced technicians  give a full overview of a vehicles condition to keep our clients informed of the condition of their vehicle.
